Deciding on the type of picture or photo frame to purchase for your artwork or precious items can, at times, seem rather overwhelming. Decisions, decisions, decisions! There are numerous options available which can make the whole process rather daunting for some. But with a little help and guidance the task can change from being a choir to a pleasurable one. This help is what we aim to provide in this blog post.
Being able to choose the ideal picture frame can make a huge difference in how your artwork or photos look. The correct frame can add depth, context, and a polished touch that brings out the best in the art and your home.
Consider the Style of Your Artwork
Start by thinking about the style of your artwork or photo. Is it a modern piece, a classic portrait, or something vibrant and abstract? Your frame should highlight the art without stealing the spotlight. Modern, minimalist pieces look great with simple, clean-lined frames. Traditional artworks often shine in ornate, gilded frames. For photos, especially black and white ones, simple black or white frames are often the way to go.
Match the Frame to Your Home Decor
The frame should also blend well with your room’s decor. Take a look around your space. If you have a rustic vibe, go for wooden frames with a distressed finish. For a modern or industrial look, metal frames could well be the best choice. Make sure the frame’s colour and style fit with your furniture, wall colour, and overall design.
Think About Matting
Matting is both pretty and practical. A mat enables your artwork to have some breathing space and helps to draw the eye to the image. It also keeps the artwork from touching the glass, which can cause damage over time. When picking a mat, it is beneficial to choose a colour that complements both the art and the frame. Neutral-coloured mats, such as white or cream are versatile and they often look fantastic, while coloured mats can focus attention on specific colours in the artwork.
Size Matters
Getting the right frame size is crucial. Measure your artwork and decide if you want the frame to be a perfect fit or if you prefer a larger frame with a mat. A frame that’s too small can make the piece look cramped, while one that’s too large might overshadow it. For small, delicate artworks, a wider frame with significant matting can add impact. For large artworks, a narrow frame can keep it from looking too bulky.
Material and Finish
Frames come in various materials like wood, metal, and plastic. Wooden frames are classic and versatile, with finishes ranging from natural wood to painted or stained. Metal frames are sleek and modern, great for contemporary art and photos. Plastic frames are budget-friendly and come in many styles and colours, though they may not be as durable or elegant as wood or metal.
Glass Options
The type of glass you choose can affect both the viewing experience and the longevity of your artwork. Standard glass is clear and affordable but can glare and doesn’t protect against UV rays. Non-glare glass reduces reflections, making it easier to see the artwork from different angles. UV-protective glass prevents fading and damage from sunlight, which is important for preserving valuable or sentimental pieces.
Trust Your Gut
At the end of the day, it is all about personal choice. It is often a good idea to “trust your gut”. This is something that a good friend advised me to do in relation to a different subject many years ago. The result was thankfully a positive one and I have continued to use his advice and therefore continue to trust my gut with plenty of additional success ever since.
Choosing a picture frame does not have to be something to dread or stress about. When thinking about everything with a clear and open mind, and with a real focus on the interior design of the room where the frame is going to be hung, the process can become fun and one to look forward to.
