Why the Right Picture Frame Can Make All the Difference

  • joybrealey's Blog

It can be easy to focus on taking the near-perfect photograph, or finding a top-notch piece of artwork, or choosing an impressive print that you feel will look fantastic in your home. But what about the picture frame? This is not something that should be an afterthought, as the right frame can make the difference between enabling that photo, artwork or print from either becoming a shining focal point or something that looks slightly out of place. The frame is therefore a critical component and one that should be given full consideration.

Why choosing the right frame matters more than you think

A frame has many benefits, such as for protection, helping to preserve the artwork, photo, or print, and they can help to increase the perceived value of the piece. But they offer so much more. A top-quality frame can help set the tone, it can help to elevate whatever is housed within it to new heights, it can help to draw eyes to the piece, and it can give it a sense of purpose. It's a bit like trying to choose an ideal pair of shoes to go with your favourite dress. If you make the right choice, people are then likely to marvel at the dress, the shoes and the overall look. It will help you to feel on top of the world. If, however, you make the wrong choice, perhaps picking the wrong colour, or a colour that really doesn't complement the dress, then it will soon become obvious when you make your entrance into whatever social space or scene you're attending. People may well not say it to your face, but the stares and the silence will tell their own story. Picking the right frame is similar; it should support the artwork, photo, or print, not fight it.

Where possible, and when budgets allow, it is prudent to choose a high-quality frame. The additional cost is likely to be well worth it in the long run. This is because over time, lower-quality materials can warp, discolour, or fail to protect the artwork or whatever else is housed within the frame properly. Picking the right frame isn't solely about looks; it should also consider longevity. High-quality frames and mounts help protect artwork from fading, dust, and everyday wear, keeping your favourite pieces looking their best for years to come.

The frame should be seen as the final touch. Something that doesn't overpower the photo, print or artwork but instead supports and adds that extra bit of character to it. Deciding on which frame material is another important consideration and one that will be impacted by what is being framed, and of course, by personal choice. If you are trying to decide which frame to house a delicate watercolour, then a somewhat chunky ultra-modern frame is not likely to be the answer. A light oak, slim wooden frame would be much more in keeping with the subject matter.

So, the next time you are thinking about displaying a piece of artwork, a favourite photograph, or a print in your home, it will be worth spending that extra time to think about the ideal frame for the piece.
