Canvas floater frames are perfect for canvas pictures or artwork that have already been stretched over a wooden stretcher frame.

Our canvas tray frames are designed to have a 5mm shadow gap between the canvas and the frame, this gives the impression that the canvas is floating inside the frame.

To create your own canvas frame, please enter the exact size of your canvas in millimetres. We will add 5mm on all sides between the canvas and the frame to create the shadow gap.

Please make sure you have your canvas to hand BEFORE placing an order as canvas sizes given by artists/websites are not always 100% accurate.

Sizes in millimetres

Please measure the depth of your canvas in millimetres and choose the most suitable depth from the options below.

The stretcher bars used to stretch canvases are usually about 20mm thick for small canvases and about 40mm thick for large canvases, but some companies use 30mm thick stretcher bars.

It is quite normal for your canvas depth to be slightly less than the depth of the frame, but it might look odd if you choose a frame depth that is less than the depth of your canvas (because the canvas will stick out of the frame).

These frames are suitable for a canvas that is about 20mm deep.

Canvas Floating Frames – Frequently Asked Questions

What is a canvas floating frame?

A canvas floating frame, sometimes called a tray frame or shadow gap frame, is designed to give your canvas artwork a modern, gallery-style presentation. The stretched canvas sits slightly recessed inside the frame, creating a subtle “floating” effect that enhances the depth and visual impact of your artwork.

Can you make custom canvas floating frames to any size?

Yes, we specialise in made to measure canvas floating frames. Simply enter your exact canvas size when ordering, and we’ll handcraft your frame to fit perfectly. Whether you need a small photo canvas frame or a large floating frame for a statement artwork, every frame is built to your specifications up to a maximum size of 110cm x 110cm.

Do you supply the stretched canvas as well as the frame?

We supply the floating frame only, ready for you to fit your own stretched canvas.

How do I measure my canvas for a floating frame?

Measure the width and height of your stretched canvas (the finished size of the artwork including the depth). Your custom floating frame will be made slightly larger to create a professional floating gap between the canvas and the inner edge of the frame.

Please see our guide below on How to Measure for a Canvas Floating Frame for step-by-step advice.

What materials and finishes are available?

Our canvas floating frames are crafted from high-quality wood mouldings available in a range of finishes — including black, white, oak, walnut, silver, gold, and contemporary painted options.

Every frame is cut, joined, and finished by hand in our UK workshop to ensure superior craftsmanship and quality.

How do I fit my canvas into a floating frame?

Each frame comes with fittings and clear instructions. To attach, place your stretched canvas inside the frame from the back and secure it using the screws provided. This creates the signature floating effect seen in art galleries and exhibitions.

Can I order multiple floating frames in different sizes?

Absolutely! You can order several custom canvas frames in different sizes and styles within a single order. Each frame is made individually to ensure a perfect fit for every artwork.

How long will my canvas floating frame order take to arrive?

Our standard turnaround time is usually 3–5 working days. Each frame is made to order and dispatched carefully packaged for safe delivery anywhere in the UK.

Do you deliver canvas floating frames internationally?

I’m sorry, but we currently only deliver within the UK, including Northern Ireland.

Do you offer discounts on bulk orders?

Yes! We offer discounts of up to 25% on bulk purchases of the same specifications. Please click on the ‘Show available discounts’ button on the product page to view the available savings.

Stylish Floating Frames for Canvas Artwork

Enhance your artwork with our premium floating frames, also known as tray frames, designed specifically for canvas prints. These frames create a beautiful “floating” effect, where your canvas sits slightly away from the edge, adding depth and sophistication to your display.

The subtle gap around the canvas adds a professional, gallery-quality presentation that instantly elevates your space.

Whether you’re displaying contemporary prints or classic oil paintings, a floating frame adds elegance while keeping the focus on your piece.

For customers looking for alternative solutions, our mount only frames provide a minimalistic way to present photos and artwork, while our frame only collection is perfect if you already have canvas or mounts prepared. This gives you complete flexibility to style your home exactly as you like.

Durable and built with craftsmanship, our floating frames are designed to protect your canvas while creating a stunning focal point in any room. They’re also a thoughtful gift option for art lovers, photographers, and anyone who wants to showcase their work beautifully.
