Picture Framing Ideas for the Hall, Stairs and Landing

  • joybrealey's Blog

When thinking about and deciding the types of picture frames to hang and display in the hall, stairs, and landing, one of the main considerations is the available space. The more space, the more options you will have. For this blog post, I will be writing about picture framing ideas for the average-sized property.

The types of picture frames suited for the hall, stairs and landing

When people visit your home, your hallway and staircase are often the first and last things they will see. It is also the first thing you and your family will see every time you enter the property, and the last thing you will see each time you leave. First impressions count, or so they say, and for that reason, it's worthwhile to give as much attention, when it comes to the types of picture frames you hang on your walls, to these areas, along with the landing, as you do to other areas of the house. Adding well-thought-out and chosen picture frames to these areas will provide a welcoming and stylish feel.

You could go for a minimal look by choosing frames that all match, or to really let your character shine through, you could opt for a mix of finishes, which could include wood, metallic, white and black.

If you live in a period home, then ornate vintage frames would work well and add a bit of drama to the space. In areas which are narrow, slim frames often look best and give a modern look.

For any 3D items such as dried flowers, medals, travel memorabilia, vinyl records, antique dolls, and christening gowns, these are best housed and displayed in shadow box frames.

A picture gallery wall is a great way to create an art feature in these types of areas. You could go for a symmetrical finish or choose a mix of different sizes depending on the type of look you are hoping to achieve. It is best to use paper templates to plan the layout and experiment before drilling any holes.

In the hallway, it is a good idea to hang the frames with their centre at eye level. 150 - 160 cm from the floor would be ideal. When thinking about hanging picture frames for the stairs, it's fashionable to have them follow the slope upwards. This helps provide a natural flow to the area. It's also a good idea to keep the distance between each frame to a consistent amount, as this helps to keep it looking balanced. A gap of around 6 - 9 cm between each frame would be advisable.

If you have a long landing, a large statement picture frame would work well. You could even combine a large feature artwork with a number of smaller pieces to create balance. For those who have tall stairwells, vertical stacking of the frames, such as three or four above each other, would look great.

To keep things looking fresh, it's worth swapping things up from time to time, such as when the seasons change. To go from a summer scene to one of autumn, as an example.
