Frame the Beauty of Nature to Bring the Outside In

  • joybrealey's Blog

Have you ever heard the term “biophilic design”? I would imagine that the majority of people wouldn’t have as it is not exactly a term that is mentioned on a regular basis in the news or the social arena. It’s basically the concept of bringing nature into our internal spaces to boost our physical and mental wellbeing. It’s a term that has been used since the 1960s but it became more and more popular during the recent pandemic. This was, of course, a time when our movements, at times, were being restricted and where it was more important than ever to keep track of our own and other’s mental health.

Bring the outside in by framing the beauty of nature

There are numerous items from nature that you can put into a picture frame. Here are some of the more popular pieces.

Seashells

For those of you who enjoy visiting the seaside and like the coast then to frame seashells would be a good route to go down. They come in different shapes and sizes and would provide a beach vibe.

Flowers

People have been framing pressed and dried flowers for many a year and they remain as popular today as they have ever been. It is so simple to create a beautifully framed centrepiece to include your favourite colours and flowers.

Pebbles

There are so many options for artistic creativity when you frame pebbles or small stones. You can arrange them to spell a word or even a sentence. They can be arranged to create an object or even the outline of a person’s face. The choices are endless and this enables one to get their creative juices flowing.

Leaves

Framing pressed leaves has advantages similar to those mentioned above when writing about framed pressed and dried flowers. Leaves, of course, come in a variety of shapes, shades, colours and sizes. This enables you to choose a style to either fit the frame or enhance the room it will be hung in.

Bark

Pieces of tree bark proudly framed and displayed add a rustic and natural look to any setting. This is without doubt my favourite item from nature to frame as it helps to bring a calming effect to a room.

Each of the items above can be framed on their own or combined as part of a personalised nature collage or multi-aperture frame. It could be a fun project for the whole family to get involved with. At the outset it’s a case of going out and finding the pieces, this is something children especially seem to enjoy, and then it’s time to choose a frame to house said items in, and then it’s a case of deciding where to hang the frame in the house. Allowing the children to be included in every stage, and with each decision, will only add to their overall enjoyment of the project.

The end result is a framed piece of nature that the whole family can enjoy and reminisce about; one that will hopefully provide that outside in look that we set out to achieve.
