An Ideal Gift for a Loyal Sports Team Supporter

  • joybrealey's Blog

If you are currently looking for inspiration as to what to gift a loved one who has a favourite sports team, then this blog post may well provide the solution. I have recently been gifted an item which is definitely up there as one of the best presents I have ever received, and I am aged 52! It was a gift that was well thought out, and they do say that it’s the thought that counts! As well as obviously having had a lot of thought put into the purchase, it is something unique, very much different from what I would usually be gifted, and something which I will treasure for the rest of my life. It is also a present that I can pass on to my son, who also shares my passion for the football team that we both support (Birmingham City), and it could well become a family heirloom.

The gift itself was something my wife had presented to me for my birthday. Having been in our relationship for many years, I am fully aware of how difficult it is to think of things to buy each other in the way of gifts for, say Valentine’s Day, birthdays and Christmas. It is all too easy to go down the route of the usual types of presents, such as perfume for her and aftershave for him. There is nothing wrong with these items, especially when one is running a little low, but they don’t really show much effort in the way of thought process.

What my wife gave me this year for my birthday was a framed Birmingham City football shirt. This was not just any shirt, though; this was a football shirt from the day the team won The Carling Cup in February 2011, beating Arsenal in the final at Wembley. I had attended the match with my father and son; three generations of the same family were there to share in what was a truly incredible experience, especially as nobody, including ourselves, had expected us to win the match. The day was one that I will never forget, and now I have the shirt that the team wore from that day displayed in an impressive frame, and what made it even more unique and special was that the whole team that played that day had signed it.

Many people up and down the country have a favourite sports team that they support. It does not only have to be football, but it could also be a cricket, rugby, baseball, or basketball shirt that you have framed. And you also don’t necessarily have to locate a shirt that has been worn in a memorable match, and that has been signed by all of the players in the way that my wife did; that simply makes it even more special. A framed shirt from the current season will also be very well received, of that there is no doubt. It will then simply be a case of agreeing on where to hang it.
