Over the weekend, I visited my nephew's home. He is 26 years of age and a very happy bachelor. He lives on his own, and I have to say, his house is very stylish. There’s only really one issue: it wasn’t particularly homely. Being a bachelor, it might be that he didn’t particularly want it to be homely, and he was merely looking for it to be a typical bachelor pad. I did discuss the matter with him, and he stated that it was something he’d never even thought about, but he was very much open to the idea of changing things up to make it potentially more welcoming for visitors.
This is the kind of relationship we have; we are able to have these types of conversations and to be honest with each other. One of the first things I noticed was that he had no plants or flowers in his house. I then spoke about photos and pictures. For example, having a few family photos of loved ones, or photos where he’s enjoying himself with friends, perhaps on a holiday or at a party. Or it could be something as simple as a framed print, maybe of a seascape or a city skyline. He did have, on average, one large print in each room, framed and hanging on the wall, and they were actually quite impressive. These were more of a nature-based basis; one was of a woodland, and another of a parkland-type environment. I just thought he could have a few more that could show his character and personality, as well as some with friends and family.
From bachelor pad to comfortable haven: simple ways to transform your space
My nephew, whose name is Gary, then stated that he was happy and even agreed with some of my suggestions and asked if we could go out and try to find and purchase some of these picture frames, prints, as well as plants and even potentially some flowers.
After a couple of hours shopping, we returned to his house with an awe-inspiring selection of canvas floating frames, five different picture frames, together with picture mounts, and a multi-photo frame that could house twelve photos. Alongside these, we also picked up some house plants and some fresh flowers. Gary even suggested that we buy some posh cushions and throw blankets, which I thought was a great idea. He was now starting to get really into this!
When returning home, Gary then went through his photos to decide which ones he was going to frame. A short while later, his house had been transformed with these new plants, the flowers, the blankets, the cushions, and the picture frames all hung or placed in positions of Gary’s choice. His house had now become a cosy and homely home.
We were both more than pleased with the result. The smell of the fresh flowers, the different colours of the plants, and the friendly and happy smiles from the people featured in the framed family photos, all helped to create a warm vibe.
